Ian Mitchelson

Ian’s funeral at the Darlington Crem on June 30 was very well attended. His coffin went off to the sound of Frank Sinatra singing Strangers in the Night, surely one of the very best examples of its genre (and still going round in my mind).

Quiz of the month…

Wild flowers? While we may be short of cowslips this year, where are the best examples of meadow cranesbill growing wild in Welbury parish?

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).

Public number? Page 11 of the Welbury book gives the 1990s phone kiosk number as 882344. We still do not have any photos of the earlier red
box but Ernie Wade recalls that in the 1940s up to seven children would crowd in there to shelter from the rain while waiting for the school bus!.

Barbara Horner, related to the Nunns of Welbury, writes from Melbourne, Australia, in response to last month’s quiz: “They’re all gone here now. In fact nearly all public phone boxes are gone. But following a family history line of enquiry some time ago, I found a connection between red phone boxes and an interesting churchyard in St Pancras Old Church, London.” See:

The photo on the right is from Wikipedia, today, and was taken in London in 2012, showing the model K6 “Jubilee” kiosk. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_telephone_box.

Weather from Rod…

June can be summarised rather briefly as very warm and very, very wet. After the warmest May in the past 7 years, last month was the warmest June since our records began in 2011, with an average monthly temperature of 15.4 °C. Temperatures reached 30 °C on the 18th and peaked at just over 31 °C on the 19th, our hottest day since last July (over 33 °C on the 19th). The total monthly rainfall of 130 mm was more than double the average for June since 2011 and it was the wettest month since December 2015 (155 mm rain). June 5th was the wettest day with 17 mm rain.

So far in July, it’s been cooler with a maximum of just 25 °C on the 6th. This day also brought an afternoon thunderstorm with 19 mm of rain in less than an hour, sufficient to flood completely the road through the village in the usual place at the end of our drive! It was the
wettest day since 21st November 2016.

Book of the month…

The World’s Worst Children
by
David Walliams
One for the school holidays this time! I think, though, that, young or old, everyone will enjoy this book. It’s great to read aloud and is hilariously funny.
David Walliams is now an extremely well-established author and here he presents ten cautionary tales featuring ten dreadful characters! The book is wonderfully illustrated in colour by Tony Ross. The format is superb – there is something to alert the attention on every page which makes the book even better for sharing with grandchildren, for example.

These tales are delightfully dreadful: are you ready to meet ‘The World’s Worst Children’? There are five beastly boys and five gruesome girls, including Sofia Sofa (a TV super-fan) and Dribbling Drew (imagine this one for yourself). Don’t forget Blubbering Bertha who makes a great deal of noise and tells fibs!

This is a funny and mischievous book with magnificent illustrations – don’t miss it if you have children or grandchildren. Or even if you don’t!

W I Report (June)

Canapes. Canapes are one-bite savouries we
were told by Nicola Calder from
Figs Catering as she demonstrated
how to make two different
delicacies with much laughter and
many questions from an attentive
audience. We discovered that they
tasted as good as they smelled.
The competition for a dried fruit
animal showed that some ladies
have great creative skills. Next
month the speaker will be S Bill
Coverdale on Energy Healing. The
competition is for a crystal.
