Quiz of the month …

Where in Welbury is Reepool Bridge?

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).

Simon Hartley? Not a person but a merged business. Several drain covers in the village bear this name, by the village pump, well, notice board etc. Some drainspotter web sites suggest triangular covers are rare. Other villages have triangular covers but Hartlids are rarer. I found one in Newcastle.
Can you spot any more? Reports of other HARTLID discoveries would be welcome.

Will it be a good year for conkers?

Weather:

Rod is preoccupied preparing his big photo exhibition, making his own frames as well as printing his own pictures. He hasn’t had time to process the weather station data, but hopes to do a double month next time. From recollection, March was chilly and windy but April had some fine weather, including some hot days around Easter, possibly the warmest of the year so far. It’s looking good for the rest of April if the forecasts can be believed.

Exhibition: After Rod Bennigton’s photo exhibition in Northallerton, he has a major exhibition this month at Richmond Station. Some of his work hangs in the Duke of W.

Film: Welbury was a film set on 4th April for Hartlepool art degree students based at Greenacres, home of student Tim Hodgson. Elections: General and District Elections will
be on 7 May but none for Welbury parish as just 4 nominations were made.

Oil buying group: Order by May 4th for last bulk buy before September

Book of the month …

Absolute Favourites
by
Mary Berry

Something to make mouths water this month – Mary Berry (of ‘Great British Bake Off’ fame) reveals the secrets of her very favourite foods!

This is an interesting collection of over one hundred relatively fuss-free dishes. I think anyone could try them and produce a successful result. Examples of the fare include ‘Saturday Night Pasta’ (foolproof) and ‘Mini Beef Wellingtons’

Mary Berry gives good advice and simple explanations. If you have a sweet tooth there are, of course, plenty of gorgeous cakes and treats!

As a bonus, the book also contains Mary’s favourite Christmas recipes – but perhaps, like me, you’d prefer to read that section at a later date! The great thing about this book is that the recipes are not difficult to make and don’t have too many ingredients. You feel you could cook and eat almost every dish – a welcome change from the cook books of most TV chefs. The book is also a feast for the eye and an interesting one to sit and look at. The photographs are lovely and the instructions very clear.

I would thoroughly recommend this book, especially if you are fed up (no pun intended) with the ‘designer’ chefs and their obscure ingredients. It has three hundred pages of great, sensible, interesting and wholesome recipe ideas.

WI Report (April)

Our usual cup of tea was eclipsed by
the results of David Beattie’s
seminar on the art of coffee roasting,
brewing and tasting. Ably helped by
Tracy he told us how he had come to
start Rounton Coffee Roasters, how he sourced and processed the beans, and then what we needed to do to make the perfect cup of coffee for each occasion.

The competition was for a coffee cup. The supper included delicious coffee cake. Next month’s speaker will be from Sally & Sarah Ltd. The competition will be for flowers in a wine glass.

Solar eclipse 20-03-2015 …

An eerie calm twilight descended over Welbury on the morning of 20th March. The heavy cloud cover obscuring the cause enhanced the sense of mystery. Then, very briefly around twenty past nine, the clouds thinned just enough to reveal the eclipse a little before its peak.

Details at Wikipedia show that the moon moved across the sun roughly from right to left, so the peak was with the crescent near the bottom of the sun. Mike’s and Martin’s photos below were at the moment the cloud broke just enough, about 15 minutes before the peak. These pictures show the sun about 76 % obscured. You can work it out since a slim crescent area is very nearly the diameter times the displacement of the circles. In Welbury, the sun would have been nearly 90 % obscured at peak.

Cricket Club Ceilidh 14-03-2015 …

Dave Willey thanks all who supported the event at East Harlsey Village Hall, a great night which raised plenty for the juniors. Batting practice mats are already purchased and more equipment will follow. Anyone interested in playing cricket please contact Dave.

Another dramatic pic from Emma Taylor at Wray House Farm. Remember the owl catching a rat (wel-e-news30)? It’s the same owl! It has lived in their cow shed for six years. Chris says the kids call it Ibis
(Latin for owl) and it eats all their vermin, but sadly also their resident woodpecker. Emma had a school project to make a low pixel photo with effect and got this shot
unexpectedly in a rapid-fire sequence on the rabbits, from a low-set tripod about ten metres away.

A Hambleton road sweeper trundles
through the village at 8 a.m. past Town End Farm, keeping the verges clear of debris. It must help to reduce the risk of clogged drains and local floods, but as we know, some drains are regular problems.
