Bill Knipe …

Bill Knipe, formerly of Spring Hill in the 1970s/80s, died July 25 in America aged 90. He is survived by his son Simon in Texas and his daughter Vanessa in York. Bill is fondly remembered by his contemporaries still here.

Farewell and welcome …

Chris and Trudy Jobling will be leaving Church View later this month. They rebuilt the house and moved in just over ten years ago. Chris was brought up in Trenholme Bar and went to Crathorne primary school which had one class with a total of 14 children, just 3 of them in his year. At that time the A19 ran through Crathorne village and the traffic was held up while the kids crossed the road. The Joblings are to develop another house in Middleton One Row.
Welcome to Charlie Taylor, who has the well known Garage Services at Standard Way in Northallerton, who will be moving in to Church View.

Congratulations …

John and Giedre Lightfoot, formerly of Mount Lawley, have a second daughter Adele Elizabeth Rose, born in Darlington Memorial Hospital in the early hours of Saturday Morning 1 August (Yorkshire Day). She weighed 6lb 15 oz and went home the same day.

Quiz of the month …

Name from Welbury? How many Welbury surnames can be made up from the letters of Welbury? What if you are allowed to use the letters any number of times?

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).
Word from Welbury? It’s not easy to find long words from Welbury. There are some with 5 letters (burly, buyer, ruble …) but then I’m stuck. Did anyone get more? With repeat letters the best I found was blueberry (9).

Snippets …

Yorkshire Day Tea Emma Holborn 01-08-2015

Pauline Havelock: Pauline’s funeral last month collected £230 which was shared between the church and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Weather from Rod …

July started on a high with a maximum over 34 °C on the 1st (the highest temperature we’ve yet recorded), but went downhill rapidly thereafter! The deluge on the 3rd/4th July (15 mm rain) gave us the wettest day since 7th November 2014 and July’s monthly rainfall (64 mm) made it the wettest month since last October (68 mm). In the last week of July temperatures failed to reach 20 °C and the monthly average of 15.7 °C was 2 degrees lower than July 2014. The minimum monthly temperature of 5.6 °C on the 26th was also 2 degrees lower than for July 2014.

Up until 13th August average temperatures have been higher than in July. The very heavy downpour on the afternoon of 10th August registered only 6 mm of rain, but it was so heavy that I suspect much of it bounced out of our rain-gauge reservoir!

Book of the month …

Go Set A Watchman
by
Harper Lee

This book has been written by Harper Lee as a sequel to ‘To Kill A
Mockingbird’ – a novel with which most people are familiar since it
has invariably been a prescribed book for many an English
examination! I read it myself as a teenager and found it charming,
heart-warming and straightforward.

Readers may well have grown up admiring the hero of ‘Mockingbird’ – the idealised father figure of Atticus Finch – and, therefore, may be

shocked and almost betrayed by his stance in ‘Watchman’ where we see him espousing morally questionable views. Jean Louise Finch (aka Scout in the first novel) is also faced with this dilemma. She returns home during the civil rights movement to find that Atticus, her father, whom she believed despised racism, is actually defending segregation.

There is not much of a plot in ‘Go Set A Watchman’ besides this unpleasant disclosure. Jean Louise must come to terms with the idea that her father is not as much of a saint as she had previously believed. The reader must also tackle this unexpected turn. Perhaps it is true to say that ‘Watchman’ is a more ‘grown-up’ book than ‘Mockingbird’ and so the reader will have to withstand the repellent disclosures about Atticus. Indeed, Jean Louise even becomes able to accept his argument eventually. It seems that Atticus wants her to accept him as a ‘normal’, flawed human being instead of idolising him as the perfect father.

‘Go Set A Watchman’ is an interesting read if you are familiar with its forerunner ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ but, nevertheless, is disappointing given that familiarity and it is certainly not a great book in its own right.

C-it-Off …

Last month’s C-it-Off hog roast sold 570 tickets and had 40 extra staff and helpers. It raised £16,000 directly, shared 50-50 between Herriott Hospice Homecare and Macmillan Cancer Support, plus a further anonymous £8,000 matching donation to Herriott.

WI Report (July)

From Dervor Hanson

A lovely summer evening saw our members gathered at Dark Star Plants in East Rounton for an introductory talk on the history of the house, the walled garden, and the business that now makes use of the site to produce plants and cut flowers in dark colours.

We were then free to wander round in our own time before enjoying a rather chilly alfresco supper. The competition for a star was won by Tina’s corn dolly. Next month Trish Brown leads a crafty evening. The competition will be for a comic postcard.

36th Welbury Show … at the Village Hall on Saturday 8th August

The Welbury Challenge Cup, for most points in garden plants, was won by Tony Harris, and the Whitegates Trophy, for most points in flowers and indoor plants, by Noreen Willey.

Welbury Circuit Cycle Race …

It’s been three years since the last regional cycle race on the Welbury circuit. The colourful spectacle was warmly welcomed and boosted pub trade, though some issues were identified. It is hoped to resolve the issues and make it an annual event.
