Quiz of the month …
How far? After checking out some local walking distances, what about the full Deighton block (around the roads), the popular jogging loop as also used by the cyclists calling it the “Welbury circuit”. How far do you reckon that is
Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).
Welbury mile? The road and footpath circuit linking Shire Garth and Spring Hill is very close to one mile, aka the Macmillan Mile since it was walked for charity at the millennium. There are two tall stiles and a kissing gate to negotiate. Between the village signs is just over 1 km; the round trip is 2 1/3 km, just under 1 ½ miles. From pub to level crossing is just under 1 km and just over half a mile, so that round trip is just over a mile.

Scarecrow festival: Elaine from Appleton writes: Thank you all for supporting another popular Scarecrow Festival this year. And how rewarding to see our donation from the event in action helping with repairs to the Church roof.
Next year the Festival will be held on the 2nd and 3rd of July, and the enthusiastic planning team are already at work. The proceeds next year will be shared between the pre-school group, the ARA and to help maintain the village bus.
Have a good Christmas everyone and don’t forget to pop your July date in your new 2016 diaries.
Oil buying group: Ken Blackwood writes: The next BULK order will close on the 11th January 2016. In case you need to be sure that you’ve enough oil over the Christmas period, we’ll place an interim order in December. If you need oil in December, please let me know by 09:00 a.m. on the 11th December for delivery before Christmas.
If you know of anyone who’d like to join the group, ask them to email me on oil@appletonwiske.org asking to be included on the emails or send me their email address and I’ll add it to the circulation list.
If you placed an order for the recent order, I was wrong when I send the message about the price being 29.8 pence per litre. It should have been 28.8 pence. I hope you’re not disappointed!!!
Weather from Rod …
October was another wet month with 70 mm of rainfall, a lot of it falling in the downpour on the 7th (26 mm). However, it wasn’t much different from October 2014 (68 mm rainfall).
Although it got off to a very warm start with the first couple of days exceeding 20°C, it was cooler thereafter and the average monthly
temperature (10.3 °C) was more than 1 degree lower than in October 2014. The coldest night of the autumn so far was the 12th (1.5°C).
To date, November has been extraordinarily warm. Up until the 12th, the minimum temperature has been 6 °C and the average temperature 11 °C: this compares with 0 °C and 8 °C for the same period last November. The UK recorded the warmest November night on record for the 9/10th, with the highest temperature being recorded in Northern Ireland, where temperatures didn’t fall below 16 °C. Well, here in Welbury, it wasn’t much cooler with a minimum of 15.2 °C! More surprisingly, the warmest period of that night was between 11:30 pm and midnight with a temperature of 16.6 °C. Rod adds Fri 13-11-2015: In the last 24 hours since I sent the weather report we’ve had a further 12.3 mm of rain – and it’s been/felt colder with a min of ~4 °C at 09:15 this morning.
First frost: So far this winter, Welbury hasn’t had a proper frost. Rod recorded previous first frosts:
2014: 6th November
2013: 2nd November
2012: 10th October
2011: 20th October
Book of the month …

The Rabbit Who Wants To Fall Asleep
By
Carl-Johan Forssen-Ehrlin
This book is hot off the presses and has a very reasonable
purchase price in paperback. Since I am about to become a
grandma, it caught my eye and, having seen the author being
interviewed on television, I decided to buy a copy. Doubtless it
will come in handy!!
The idea is that, if you struggle to get your child to fall asleep, this book will do the trick if used as part of your bedtime routine. I can’t wait to try it out with a child as it certainly has the desired effect with the adults I have used as Guinea pigs! It is a repetitive tale with a distinct pattern to the language which produces a kind of soporific, almost hypnotic effect. I listened to a little of the audio version online and my eyelids were drooping in no time!
Roger Rabbit can’t fall asleep so Mummy Rabbit takes him to visit Uncle Yawn. We join him on his journey and (hopefully) are lulled to sleep along with Roger who looks extremely tired in the illustrations! The story is simple but it somehow evokes a peaceful and sleepy atmosphere.
Remembering sleepless nights with my children, I think it is well worth a try. If anyone tries it with a little one before I do please let us know the results…zzzzzzzz

WI Report (October)
From Dervor Hanson
Sue and Angus Gaudie welcomed
members to Stamfrey Farm Organics
where we were given an interesting talk on the history of the business and shown round the milking parlour and dairy where they make clotted cream and yoghurt. We then sampled their products at a delicious cream tea including warm scones and
chocolate cake. The competition was for Halloween lantern. Next month the theme of the AGM evening will be Canada as it was the original home of the WI.

Hurworth Hunt:
The traditional autumn hunt with the Rountons hounds turned out from the Duke of Wellington as usual on Saturday morning 31st October. What was unusual, if not unprecedented here, was the appearance of the Hunt Saboteurs’ Association with their black banner and a local police presence. Welbury is big enough and vibrant enough to include diverse views of this controversy. It’s not a simple issue, with deep underlying aspects of freedom, respect and restraint, brought to a head by recent legal changes. I’m not sure the law has helped, and it may have muddled as much as it clarified, though I don’t want to blame the law, even if it sometimes can be “a ass”. After all, civilisation needs effective law. On hunt day I failed to get the usual photos (batteries cold) and learned that the ‘sabs’ would post pictures on their website. They have www.huntsabs.org.uk but I couldn’t find us there. Dawn Ward kindly found a picture with me on it at the sabs’ facebook page, where there are lots more, but as I don’t do facebook I can’t get them. So for once we are pictureless for the hunt – sorry! The hunt’s own facebook page (search
‘hurworth’) has some group pictures but again I found none of Welbury.
Village footpath …
The Parish Council has recently discussed the idea of
extending the village footpath from the church to the Village Hall. Parish Clerk
Elizabeth Robson writes, after the November meeting: The footpath was discussed as part of matters arising; as you know there had been very few responses received regarding people’s views although there were more negative than positive opinions raised both as part of the discussion and the request through the wel-e-news. Therefore it was decided to abandon any further discussion around the proposal of a footpath extension to the village hall.
Church snippets…
Joanne Hughes writes (Oct 22): Firstly a big thank you to all who helped tidy up the churchyard last Saturday, it looks great.
Secondly, if anyone has some time to spare this Saturday we will be giving the inside a thorough clean from 10.30am onwards. As they say many hands make light work. There’ll be refreshments available and a variety of jobs to choose from.
Now that the dark nights are here we have switched on the church floodlights. Welbury PCC would greatly appreciate donations to fund the floodlights during the dark winter months. Donations can be given to any member of the PCC; Pat Wade, Roger Bennett, Peter Walker, Liz Moore, Kate Lindo or Joanne Hughes. Alternatively cheques can be posted to Roger
Bennett (treasurer) at Field House, Welbury DL6 2SG. Suggested donation to sponsor the lights for a month is £20. Many thanks to our first sponsors received this week.
St Leonards has had three pews removed from the back of church to make a more usable space to accommodate pushchairs, wheelchairs and a space for younger children to sit around a small table and colour/listen during services. If anyone is interested in obtaining a pew in exchange for a donation to church please contact Joanne or Roger. Information redacted for website publication, please contact us if you require further information.
Bike race …
Following last year’s bike races, organiser Marcus Smith asks for views: Do you think the Circuit of Welbury would be good on the Sunday Aug 7th ? Or would it be better on the Saturday 6th Aug? Would this help with the village fete? Or would another different date be better? The editor will be pleased to collect and pass on responses.
