Robin Hutchings
Robin Hutchings from Spring Hill died peacefully at Beechwood Care Home, Northallerton, on Thursday 28th January. His funeral was held on Wednesday 10th February at 11.15am at Darlington crematorium and afterwards at the Duke of Wellington. By family request, donations were to Alzheimers Research. Robin and Janet came to Welbury from Appleton Wiske in the early 1980s with their two children Joanne and Simon. The wake at the Duke of Wellington was well attended by two generations of Welburians.
Quiz of the month …
Special days? Today is Valentine’s Day and you can discover all about it from Wikipedia. It used to be an occasion for sending a secret love letter anonymously, which, being anonymous, would seem likely to be futile. But did you ever hear of a Valentine note which led to a genuine relationship? When browsing the subject I came across “Kissing Friday”, popular in Yorkshire before the war, when boys were allowed to kiss girls before noon (if they could catch them). Did you ever hear of it? Any related tales or traditions from
Welbury would be very welcome, and/or proposals for new ones (a Welbury wassail perhaps?).
Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).
Archbishop visits? Last month the
Archbishop of York made a second visit to Welbury, in his January pilgrimages. His first visit was 28 April 2013 for the rededication of
the church bells. Wel-e-news44 had a great cover picture of Ron Wade with the Archbish.

Early daffs After a mild autumn and winter those daffs on Races’ corner made their usual early appearance but not as early as those reported further south before Christmas. Snowdrops and primroses yes, and even the odd crocus so far, have marked the mild winter

Weather from Rod …
Firstly, apologies from your weatherman, as there are data from only 3 weeks in January. Due to a technical hitch, the second week’s
data were lost from the Weather Station before I downloaded them.
However, in the other weeks rainfall was 48 mm (cp. 27 mm in January 2015) and the wettest day was the 9th with 10 mm of rain. The warmest day was the 24th at 13.3 °C and the coldest night was the 21st (–2.2 °C).
Corresponding temperatures for January 2015 were 13.9 °C and –4.0 °C. The average monthly temperature was 5.9 °C compared with 3.9 ° in January 2015.
So far in February, we’ve had one very wet day on the 7th (10 mm rain) and three successive sub-zero nights on the 10-12th.
Book of the month …

A God in Ruins
by
Kate Atkinson
Having previously read, enjoyed and reviewed Kate Atkinson’s work, I decided to embark upon this newish novel by the author. I was not disappointed and found it an equally worthwhile read.
It is at once gripping, emotional and very funny in its examination of war and its effects – not only upon those who live through it but upon subsequent generations, too.
The book tells the story of Teddy Todd who is a World War II bomber pilot.
He is also an amateur poet, husband, father and grandfather and we are witness to his struggle to navigate the perils of twentieth century progress. He has endured a great deal in battle but faces what he perceives as a greater challenge – to face living in a future which he always believed
would be denied to him.
This book is magical and proves, once again, that Kate Atkinson is one of the best novelists around. Do read it – you will be captivated.

New bins
The face of Welbury changed a little last week when the new recycling wheely bins were delivered. The bright blue lids will make a new splash of colour at least on the Wednesdays when they are emptied at the kerbside. Next week will be just the old black bins, then in the following week green bins plus blue bags and boxes as in the past. The new blue&black bins (black with blue lid) will first be collected in Welbury on Wed 9 March, They are indicated on the Hambleton.gov.uk website calendar as “recycling”, and will be emptied fortnightly from March 9 at the same time as the green bins, so it will then alternate between (1) black bins only, and (2) green bins plus blue&black bins plus blue boxes (with glass).
More information is in the leaflet you should have received with the new bin and online at hambleton.gov.uk or phone 779977. Remember the new bins are for all recycling but No Glass, No Food waste and No Garden waste. So we will be using all three bins and still using the blue box for glass, but the blue bags will be retired from the process and you can do whatever you want with them!
