Congratulations to Becky and Mike Waddle on the birth of their daughter Everly Beau, our youngest Welburian, on January 23 at a healthy 8 lb 5 oz.

Quiz of the month…
When? There are plenty of bright
snowdrops in Welbury but when do you think the daffs will show? They have been known to emerge in early February but not this year!
Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).
Where? Stuart Mackie spotted that Welbury Room at the Crathorne Hall Hotel, where Stuart will be holding his wedding reception in July. The hotel say it continues the traditional room names from before the hall was converted to a hotel. We are in good company, with 34 others from Ampleforth to York (alphabetically).
Weather from Rod …
Some technical problems with the weather station have prevented Rod from doing the usual weather report but we hope to have them in future. Even without the data we can see that it was a dull and miserable January albeit a mild one. We look forward to the spring flowers coming out soon, encouraged by this morning’s sunshine.
Book of the month…

The Whistler
by
John Grisham
This is the new thriller from Grisham and it does not disappoint
if you are a fan of his work. If you have yet to read any of his
books, then this is a good place to start – you will be gripped
from beginning to end.
Lacy Stoltz is investigating judicial misconduct amongst Florida’s judges and, so far, her cases have been relatively run-of-the-mill – judges taking ‘backhanders’ and the like.
However, we are introduced to Greg Myers, a lawyer with a past, who changes everything. He represents a whistle blower (the ‘Whistler’ of the title) who knows of a female judge involved with organised crime. Her lavish lifestyle is a testament to her ill-gotten gains! This judge has enabled the building of a casino on a Native American/Indian reservation. At least two people who opposed the construction of the casino are now dead. The judge concerned is clearly making a fortune from undeclared winnings……. Lacy is needed to investigate with Myers and his ‘Whistler’ standing to make millions – if the state recovers illegally acquired assets those who gave the heads up will gain a large percentage of them as a reward.
This novel is full of intrigue, excitement and many twists and turns in the plot. It is well worth a read and will keep you on the edge of your seat and see you through some cold, winter evenings.

From Dervor Hanson
This month saw members gathering at the Duke of Wellington for our Annual Dinner which was as usual excellent.

Afterwards we played a silly game then Julie our President was given some flowers to show our appreciation of all that she does.
