Arthur Harvey …
Arthur Harvey, late of Spring hill, died peacefully at home on Saturday 13th August. Information redacted for website publication, please contact us if you require further information. Arthur was 82 and is survived by his wife Norma and children Lisa, Nigel, Ian and Martin. The family lived at No. 8 Spring Hill as original Spring Hillers from 1971 to 1997. They are warmly remembered
by that generation of Welburians.
Quiz of the month…
Record?: What is the current welly wanging all-ages World Record under Welbury Rules and who set it?
Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).
Who? Mike Binks was a Teesside racing cyclist for the Cleveland Wheelers back in the 70s. He was in his early 20s when he was hit by a motorbike whilst out training and tragically killed. The Mike Binks Memorial Trophy race has been held since 1977, mainly though the efforts of his brother Steve and the Cleveland Wheelers club members.
It’s a prestigious trophy to win with many big names in UK cycling winning the event. This year it was the main event in the Circuit of Welbury Race on August 6.
Weather from Rod …
At 16.8 °C, August’s monthly average temperature almost matched July’s (avg = 17.1 °C) and it was warmer than the 2 previous Augusts (16.3 °C in 2015 and & 15.0 °C in 2014). The hottest day reached almost 29 °C on the 23rd and the coldest night fell to just under 7 °C on the 9th. Unfortunately, in the previous wel-e-news, I happened to mention that last August was our wettest month in 2015 and that remark seems to have ensured a corresponding amount of rainfall in August this year, more in fact with around 110 mm, our wettest month for several years. More than 50% of the rainfall fell in just 3 days, the 21st, 22nd and 28th.
Up until 12th September, it’s been very similar temperatures to August, but definitely drier, with just one very wet day on the 4th (22 mm rain)

More hot weather this week, and more fun for
Rod’s visitors, even if the duck pond is a bit
small for bath time.

Book of the month …

There’s an owl in my towel
by
Julia Donaldson and Rebecca Cobb
Something a little different this month – with apologies to our adult readers!! Or perhaps not? This little board book is a delight for all ages and the pleasure it gives me to read it to my
grandson is equal to his delight in it. It is written by Julia Donaldson (who writes the ‘Gruffalo’ stories) and illustrated beautifully by Rebecca Cobb.
Each page has a rhyming couplet taking us through a baby’s day. Whatever the baby tries to do it seems there is an animal impeding progress – ‘a mole in my bowl’ or ‘a lamb in my pram’!! Each page also has a flap to lift showing how the situation is resolved. Brilliant!! At bedtime, the baby finds ‘a ted in my bed’ and, of course, lets the ted stay.
A lovely read at any time of day but especially good for bedtime. I recommend this book highly – very easy for the adult to make interesting and fun as it is simple and carried along by the rhymes. At the back of the book there are song lyrics to join in with and readers can go online to sing along, too. Don’t miss this one if you are a parent or grandparent of a very little
person!

John, her teddy bear, accompanied Ruth Roberts to the Village Hall to show why she has a lifelong passion for bears of all kinds which has led her to travel to British Columbia and Churchill to observe, Black, Grizzly and Polar Bears in their natural environment. Eighteen teddy bears of all ages and sizes came with the WI members to take part in the competition.

Wellies ahoy …
The annual Welbury welly-wanging Open Challenge 2016 started with an U13 World Record under Welbury Rules when Gareth Hunt (12) threw 19.0 metres with his first attempt in Meynell’s Field opposite the Duke of Wellington. His friend Archie Polson (13) showed consistent form with good flight and achieved a best of 23.5 metres, setting World Records up to 18 and under, breaking those set by Alan Brooks and equalling that of Steven Taylor in 2011. The Open Challenge was won this year by Rod Bennington with a mighty hurl of 25.5 metres, setting new World Records under Welbury Rules for all ages of 50 and over, despite being 65 himself. Leonie O’Carroll made 15.1 metres for a new women’s 50+ World Record to take the women’s Open Challenge.
Rod and Leonie represented Welbury in the head-to-head with Wellington in Somerset at 4.30pm after our local event and after the much larger event in Wellington from which their contestants were selected. Our athletes continued to practise in the lead up and may have overdone it and left their best form behind them, as Wellington’s John (30.4 metres) and Mandy (18.2) triumphed on this occasion (though we had rather dominated it in recent years). No hard feelings then, but get ready for the second Saturday in September again in 2017.
