Quiz of the month…

First frost?: What is the latest first frost we have seen in Welbury? It seems a proper frost has yet to appear this winter although the 1.4 degrees on October 3 may have had a hint of frost.

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).

Welly record? The current world welly wanging record under Welbury Rules was set last year by Brompton’s British champion shot putter Scott Lincoln at 40 metres.

Weather from Rod…

After our wettest month for several years in August, September was drier but we still had 62 mm of rain, more than a third of that falling on a single day (22 mm on 4th); not so wet as September 2015 though with its 90 mm of rain. Despite the wet, the month was warm, com- fortably our warmest September since we began keeping records in 2010. Temperatures peaked on the 13th at almost 32 °C, our second hottest day of the year, and the coldest night was a relatively balmy 7 °C. The average monthly temperature of 15.4 °C was more than 3 degrees higher than September 2015.

Up until the 13th October it’s been fairly dry with only 13 mm of rain and we’ve had the cold- est night of autumn on the 3rd (1.4 °C).

Seasonal sights across the road from the Village Hall where there were plenty of roadside conkers.

Book of the month…

Where My Heart Used to Beat By
Sebastian Faulks

Something a little more challenging than last month’s delightful children’s book, this is an intellectual and challenging read! Sebastian Faulks is again on excellent form and offers us a great novel which seems to contain everything: laughter, tragedy, love, loss, war, travel and more. The book would be ideal for the long winter evenings to come.

The narrator, Dr. Robert Hendricks, tells us his life story using the ingenious dual-timeline.

His search for the past takes the reader not only to Italy in 1944 but also to the heyday of the 1960s and – most dramatically – to the trenches of the First World War. The scene is set, initially, on a small island where Hendricks’s host is Alexander Pereira who seems to know more about his guest than the doctor himself does.

If you are a fan of Sebastian Faulks, you should most certainly not miss this book. It is a demanding and rather sad novel but well worth the effort, as it is sure to leave a lasting impression on the reader.

W I Report (September)

From Dervor Hanson

An enjoyable and interesting evening was had by all members when Andrew McAlistair, ably helped by Steph Race, gave a talk on Mason’s Dry Yorkshire Gin from Bedale. Samples of three different flavours were handed round and a great many questions asked. The winners

of the competition entertained by reading out their Odes to Gin during supper.

Macmillan coffee morning …

Sue McDonnell writes: The fourth Macmillan Coffee Morning held in Welbury was on Saturday 1st October in the Village Hall.

Every year we have managed to surpass the previous year’s total and this year we raised a massive £685 for Macmillan which I am thrilled to bits with.
I would like to thank everyone who supported the coffee morning in any way. It was very well attended and I received lots of cash donations, raffle prizes and items for the Bring and Buy stall.

The Bring and Buy stall alone made almost £100. Sweets in the Jar (321 smarties) was won by Val Barker and Tina Race won a walnut fudge cake and £5 for the nearest guess to the number of spots on the cake. Not forgetting thanks to my helpers in setting up the hall, putting up notices and assisting on the day, without them it could not have happened.

I wanted to do this in memory of my husband Phil whom many of you knew who died 2 years ago, and for Macmillan as they helped us so much and hope they will continue to help many others.

This may have been the last coffee morning I have organised in Welbury but I will continue to do it in Newbury as long as I am fit enough.

If anyone missed the day and would still like to donate I have a Just Giving website for it and the link to it is below:-
