Farewell and welcome…

Farewell Sue McDonnell, resident of Spring Hill for almost twenty years, former Show Secretary and all-round contributor to village activities, who is moving south this week to Newbury nearer to her daughter. Sue says she and her late husband Phil really enjoyed their time here and she would love to keep in touch if anyone is passing Newbury way. (New address and landline are with the editor; the mobile is unchanged.) Welcome to Katie Elsdon from Low Worsall who is moving in to Number 8.

Quiz of the month…

Trianne? Our church choir is called Trianne. What is the origin of that name?

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).

High point? What is the highest peak in our continent and which Welburian had climbed it? Mount Elbrus in Russia (used to be in Georgia) in the Caucasus, climbed this year by Ted Adamski of Shire Garth.

Weather from Rod…

After seasonally normal temperatures in October, last month proved to be the coldest Novem- ber since our records began in 2010. The average monthly temperature of 4.8 degrees was around 3 degrees lower than in 2015 and 2014, and more typical of December averages. There were 7 nights when it dropped to 0 °C or below, the coldest being –3 °C on the 9th. Colder usually means drier, but not last month! After the driest October for years, November was very wet with 116 mm of rain, 45 mm of that falling on a single day (21st/22nd). It was the wettest month since December 2015 (156 mm rain) – the month of last year’s floods – with the wettest day since September 2015 (55 mm rain on the 15th).

Since the start of December, it’s been significantly warmer and drier – only 2 nights below zero and 10 mm of rain up until the 12th.

Wet Welbury

Rod says this was “taken outside our gate on 22 November after the very heavy overnight rain”.

Ron Wade

Pat Wade sends this picture of Ron in James Cook Hospital (with bladder cancer) with this message: “Sending our best wishes to every- one in the village and a photo of the man himself. Love from Pat and Ron.”

Book of the month…

Mount!
by
Jilly Cooper

Jilly Cooper does it again! You will be thrilled to escape into this sassy, satisfying novel when the Christmas festivities get a little too much for you! Our hero, Rupert Campbell-Black, returns to centre stage after a period away from the spotlight. He (surprise, surprise) has an obsession; he wants his horse, ‘Love Rat’ to become champion stallion. He is determined to beat his rival, Cosmo Rannaldini, and to this end he must travel to all the richest flat races in the world. Rupert appears (!) to be a changed man,

having been tamed by his wife, Taggie, and so it seems that he finds it hard to leave the comforts of home behind. And so the scene is set……

Jilly Cooper never disappoints and there are all the usual unexpected twists and turns to the plot, mainly centred on the interaction and sexual chemistry between characters old and new. Cooper is skilful in introducing us to the new characters, each as boldly drawn and vivid as the original ones. The writing is hilarious, entertaining and, above all, fun! This book is pure escapism and will keep you turning the pages. It would make a great Christmas gift, too….

W I Report (November)

From Dervor Hanson

A Spanish theme had been chosen for our AGM so all the members arrived dressed up for the occasion. The President and Committee were given a unanimous vote of confidence when they were re-elected unchanged. After reporting on a most successful and enjoyable year everyone enjoyed a supper of many various tapas and puddings.

Christmas party…

Once again Welbury children were treated to a magic Christmas party with Santa in the village hall, thanks to organisation by Joanne Hughes and friends on behalf of the church.
