Congratulations…

To Ted Adamski of Shire Garth, our veteran fell runner, on climbing Europe’s highest peak, Mount Elbrus in Russia (used to be in Georgia) in the Caucasus, Ted skipped his American mountain run this year, but kept up his amazing Fellsman record here in Yorkshire as well as making this new conquest.

Quiz of the month…

High point? We’re leaving the EU but Welbury is still in Europe geographically. What is the highest peak in our continent and which Welburian had climbed it?

Answers from last month (as far as we know; tell us if you know better).

First frost? This year we had a hint of frost (1.4 °C) as early as October 3 but had to wait until November 9 for the first subzero frost (it was -1.4 °C). Rod’s records show that over the last six years the first subzero frost has been as early as 10 Oct (2012) and as late as 03 Dec (2014).

Weather from Rod…

After the warmest September for years, temperatures in October were back to the seasonal norm with a monthly average temperature of 10.2 °C, identical to October 2015 and just a little cooler than in 2014. Highs and lows were also very similar to October 2015 with a max- imum of almost 22 °C on the 4th and a minimum of 1.4 °C on the 3rd – low enough for a ground frost, though I didn’t see one. October rainfall was comfortably the lowest in the past 5 years with a monthly total of just 46 mm: the previous 3 years have all been around 65 mm.

Since the start of November, there’s been a sudden drop in temperatures, with an average of only 4.5 °C for the first 10 days (and nights) and our first sub-zero night on the 9th (-1.4 °C). It’s also been much wetter with over 30 mm of rain so far.

Book of the month…

A Life in Questions by
Jeremy Paxman

This is the long-awaited memoir of one of the most recognisable faces on television and it is as candid as you would expect. Jeremy Paxman writes his memoir in an uncompromising manner and in much the same way as he conducts interviews with others – he is incisive, astute and yet compassionate. Paxman writes about the principles that have governed his professional life and reveals much about the BBC and the scandals and rows in which he has been involved.

It was a surprise to me that he is able to inject so much humour into his recollections – he shows another side to the dour, no-nonsense presenter with whom we are so familiar on our screens. having said that, he is the compere of my favourite TV show – University Challenge – in which he often manages a joke, albeit at the expense of some rather hapless students!

This book draws the reader in – we are fascinated by the stories from a career which has taken Paxman around the world as well as to the more familiar studio environments. Paxman pulls no punches with his accounts of the activities of those who have crossed his path and is intuitive in his assessment of them.

A brilliant book – so well written that it is an absolute pleasure to pick up. A great gift if you know a Paxman fan but a great read even for those who are not.

W I Report (October)

From Dervor Hanson

Our members are not foxes but we are just as crafty. Following the instruction of Treen Gaudie we spent a happy evening creating rag wreaths from wire frames and remnants which resulted in a gaudy display of many colours. The competition was for the best but no one could agree which one it was so all members were declared to be winners. Next month our AGM night will have a Spanish theme with a supper of tappas.

Bonfire night…

The Race family kindly hosted the village bonfire once again in their back field on Sunday November 6. It had been November weather of course but dried up a bit in the north wind as the bonfire was lit. The mighty blaze and impressive firework display must have been seen from Appleton Wiske even if we couldn’t see theirs. Races’ shed and hard standing, with a warming brazier, kept us cozy enough on a dark night, with comforting soup, snacks and mulled wine complementing neighbourly conversation.
